Charleston L. SarjeantCharleston L. Sarjeant is a steel pannist, percussionist and composer / arranger. He is currently the steel drum (steelpan) teacher at the Roland Hayes School of Music in Roxbury. Mr. Sarjeant began playing the steelpan at a young age and formed his own band, Pan United, when he was 14. Pan United was a non-profit steel band program focusing on school-aged youth in Boston. By its last year of operation, the band had won 2nd place four out of the five times when they competed at Boston's Caribbean American Carnival and was the first steelband in Boston whose members were capable of reading music. He is an alumnus of the Boston Arts Academy. Mr. Sarjeant began teaching for various programs including: Spontaneous Celebrations, RAW Art Works and Lynn Economic Opportunity Inc's after school program. In 2005, he joined the staff of the Boston Public Schools Citywide Percussion Ensemble and was instrumental in the incorporation of steelpan playing into the program. Outside of teaching, Mr. Sarjeant enjoys a busy performance schedule, from freelancing with large steel orchestras in New York City to tours with the Dis-N-Dat reggae band. |
